Harnessing Wisdom, Innovating the Future Chambroad Technology Award Chemistry and Sustainability Forum Successfully Held
Guangzhou, China, June 16, 2024 – True to its mission to foster industry-academia integration, promote innovation and nurture emerging talents, the Chambroad Technology Award Chemistry and Sustainability Forum was successfully held in Guangzhou during the 34th Chinese Chemical Society Congress. At the forum, the Chambroad Technology Award Organizing Committee presented awards to 17 winners of Chambroad Outstanding Doctoral Award in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials and their supervisors. Leading industry experts have been invited to report on the latest scientific research, practical applications of scientific and technological achievements, and share their insights on the sustainable development of the industry. The event also showcased 49 academic research results from various universities and relevant industries. It iterates the industry’s common need for technological innovation, building an innovative platform for industry-academia-research collaboration and exchange.
Amongst the attendees were Academician Wan Lijun, President of the Chinese Chemical Society; Academician Fu Xianzhi, Vice President of the Chinese Chemical Society; Researcher Fan Qinghua, Vice President, Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chinese Chemical Society; Academician Guo Dongming, Former President of the Dalian University of Technology and Director of the National Key Laboratory of High Performance Precision Manufacturing of the Dalian University of Technology; Academician Liu Zhongfan, Director of the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology of the Peking University and President of the Beijing Graphene Institute; Academician Li Yadong, President of Anhui Normal University and Director of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Tsinghua University; Academician Li Yongfang, Researcher of Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chair Professor of Soochow University; Academician Ding Kuiling, President of Shanghai Jiaotong University; Academician Peng Xiaojun, Professor of School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology; Academician Xu Chunming, President of Shandong Institute of Petroleum and Chemical Technology and Dean of School of Carbon Neutrality Future Technology, China University of Petroleum (Beijing); Academician Fan Chunhai, Dean of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University; Academician Zhang Liqun, President of Xi'an Jiaotong University; Academician Zhu Weihong, standing committee member of the Party Committee and Vice President of East China University of Science and Technology; Ms. Wan Chunling, President of Charity and Filial Piety Commonweal Foundation of Le’an Shandong; Mr. Ma Yunsheng, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Board of Chambroad Holding Group, as well as senior experts and scholars from top universities and research institutes, and representatives of well-known enterprises in the industry.
Rewarding talents of scientific innovations
Academician Wan Lijun delivered an opening speech. In his opinion, the collaboration between the Chinese Chemical Society and Chambroad Holding Group is a brand-new approach. Integrating the strengths of industry and academia, it provides a stage for chemical science and technology talents to showcase their expertise. The collaboration also opened up a broad path for the transformation and application of chemical research. He believed that through the joint efforts, more scientific achievements will emerge, more top researchers will be cultivated, and greater contributions will be made to the development of chemical science and technology in China and the world.
In his speech, Mr. Ma Yunsheng described innovation as the very foundation of sustainability, and enterprises as core bearers to catalyze important scientific findings to practical implementations. Chambroad Technology Award strives to discover, nurture, and support the young and promising researchers of science and technology. It aims to strengthen the integration of industry, academia, and research, enhance the application aspects of scientific and technological findings, elevate the level of industrialization, and jointly promote scientific and technological progress and sustainable development of the industry.
Academician Fu Xianzhi announced the “ Chambroad Technology Award 2023 Recognition Decision” on the forum. The “Chambroad Technology Award - 2023 Chambroad Outstanding Doctoral Award in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials” shortlisted a total of 17 winners, who received 2 gold, 5 silver, and 10 bronze medals. Ruan Linxin and Zhang Yunmao, gold medalists of the Award, along with Shi Shiliang, Ruan’s supervisor and researcher of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, each gave their acceptance speeches. After the awarding, 13 guests from the scientific community and industry extended their warmest welcome to the next Award.
Shaping a Greener Future Together
Under the “Dual-Carbon” Strategy, the battle to address environmental challenges and push for greener and more sustainable development has always been arduous. It is also a great test of problem-solving ingenuity, requiring strategies that are both comprehensive and creative. At the forum, four leading experts delivered presentation, contributing new ideas to meet the challenges of sustainable development.
Academician Zhang Liqun reported on the “Recycling Technology for Green Rubber Materials and Rubber”. He introduced the two new original rubber types of China, bio-based itaconate elastomer and bio-based degradable polyester elastomer, as well as the latest progress in dandelion rubber and in the preparation of recycled rubber from continuous desulfurization of multistage screws in China.
Academician Li Yadong presented his work in the “Opportunities and Challenges of Single-Atom Catalysis”, and described the history, status quo and future prospects of this field. Single-atom site catalysts, characterized by maximized atom utilization and isolated active sites, have become a heated topic in catalytic research in recent years. In his research, Academician Li explored the realization of their low-carbon reaction paths, which has become essential for their development.
Prof. Li Bogeng, Director of State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering of Zhejiang University published a report titled “Creating New High Grounds for High-end Polyolefin Products through Industry-University Integration”. He shared his experience in the collaboration with enterprises, which has realized the pilot test of 1,000-ton and 10,000-ton-sized production of polyolefin elastomers, as the very first in the country.
Prof. Hou Xu, supervisor of the Gold Prize Winner of the 2023 Chambroad Outstanding Doctoral Award in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials and a professor of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University, gave a presentation on the "Research on Bio-inspired Multi-scale Pores/Channels". He shared new ideas for designing and preparing composite functional materials through the study of micro and nano structure and function of biomaterials.
Accelerating the transformation of scientific research findings
A unique academic poster wall showcased the research done by past and present winners of the Award and relevant universities, as well as the R&D results of the industry. The exchange event provides a platform for precise industry-academia communication, and further promotes the translation of innovative achievements into business productivity.
About the Chambroad Technology Award
The Chambroad Technology Award is a national industry award for science and technology established by the Charity and Filial Piety Commonweal Foundation of Le’an Shandong and funded by the Chambroad Holding Group. Jointly organized by the Foundation and the Chinese Chemical Society, it aims to recognize talents who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering and materials, and inspire more researchers to embrace innovation.
Since its establishment in 2019, Chambroad Technology Award has attracted participation from over 100 academicians and more than 1,000 university and school leaders in the organization, nomination, and selection procedures. Of all applications received, 94.59% came from universities in the Project 985, and 83.95% came from universities in the Project 211. A total of 421 winners were selected, represented by Academician Liu Zhongmin (winner of the 2020 Chambroad Technology Excellence Award) and Liu Zhongfan (winner of the 2022 Chambroad Technology Excellence Award).
